To our readers,
Black Swan began as an investment club.A few years ago, I started Black Swan Investment Company with the goal of developing an investment process centered around macroeconomics, fundamental research, technical, market positioning, and understanding the forces that move capital across global markets. Long before there was a newsletter, Black Swan was focused on investing and managing an active book.I decided to launch the newsletter because I wanted to open up part of that research process to a wider audience—particularly younger investors who may be in the same position I once was: interested in financial markets and investing, but struggling to understand how all the pieces fit together and how professional investors actually think about markets. One of the most important things to understand about Black Swan is that the newsletter is not separate from our investment process. The macroeconomic research, market analysis, company research, and investment themes published through Black Swan are built from the same research process we use to operate our own active book. When we study inflation, interest rates, Federal Reserve policy, economic growth, commodities, currencies, positioning, corporate earnings, valuations, or geopolitical developments, we aren't researching those subjects simply because they make interesting newsletter topics. We are studying them because they are variables we believe matter when making real investment decisions. The newsletter allows us to bring readers along for that process.
How We Invest
Black Swan approaches markets primarily through a macro-oriented investment framework. We want to understand the environment first and individual opportunities second. That means asking questions such as: Where are we in the economic cycle? Where are interest rates headed? What is happening with inflation and liquidity? Where is capital flowing? What risks is the market pricing in? What might it be overlooking? And ultimately, which assets, sectors, industries, or individual companies could benefit from that environment? We are also not a day-trading operation. Our investment horizon will vary depending on the opportunity, but positions are generally built around ideas expected to develop over a period of days, weeks, or months rather than minutes or hours. Some opportunities may be tactical, while others may develop into longer-term positions. The common denominator is that there should be a research-backed thesis behind the trade. The objective is not to constantly trade. It is to identify situations where we believe the relationship between risk and potential reward is attractive, establish a thesis, and allow that thesis time to develop.
Our Active Book
Black Swan operates an active investment book, and the newsletter provides readers with insight into the research and thinking behind many of those positions. This is an important part of what separates Black Swan from a traditional financial news page. We aren't simply reporting what happened in markets after the fact. We are actively studying the same environment because we have capital exposed to it.That doesn't mean every piece of research results in a trade. In fact, much of investing is researching opportunities and ultimately deciding not to invest. This is particularly important when it comes to our Stock Picks research.Black Swan does invest in individual companies when we believe an opportunity fits our broader strategy. However, a company appearing on the Black Swan Stock Picks page does not mean that it is currently held in our book, has previously been held, or will be purchased in the future. Our Stock Picks page should be viewed as a research library. We analyze companies because understanding businesses, industries, valuations, competitive advantages, financial statements, and earnings trends makes us better investors. Some of those companies may eventually become investments. Others may never meet the conditions necessary for us to put capital behind them.Research comes first. Investment comes second.
Why I Started the Newsletter
When I first became interested in investing, one of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to move beyond the surface level. There is an enormous amount of financial content telling people what stocks to buy, what the market did today, or where they should put their money. There is far less content teaching people how to actually research those decisions themselves.I wanted Black Swan to help fill that gap.My goal is not for readers to blindly copy our portfolio or depend on Black Swan to tell them what to buy and sell. The goal is for readers to understand the reasoning behind investment decisions and eventually develop the ability to conduct that research themselves. That means learning how to read economic data, understand monetary policy, analyze financial statements, study industries, evaluate valuations, recognize changing market regimes, manage risk, and connect developments across different asset classes.Instead of simply asking, "What should I buy?" I want Black Swan readers to learn how to ask, "Why would I want to own this in the first place?"That distinction is at the heart of what we're building.
Building Independent Investors
Ultimately, Black Swan is about financial independence in more ways than one.I believe investors should understand what is happening with their own money. There is nothing inherently wrong with passive investing or working with professional financial advisors, and both can serve important purposes. But I also believe people should have the opportunity to understand markets for themselves rather than blindly allocating their savings without understanding what they own or why they own it.Black Swan exists to help people develop that understanding. We want to teach readers how to perform real, hands-on research; how to develop and challenge an investment thesis; how to understand risk; and how to make informed decisions based on evidence rather than headlines, hype, or someone else's conviction. The objective isn't to predict every market move correctly. Nobody can.The objective is to build a repeatable process that allows us—and eventually our readers—to interpret new information, adapt when conditions change, recognize when we are wrong, and make increasingly informed investment decisions over time.
The Black Swan Mission
Black Swan remains, first and foremost, an investment company. The newsletter is an extension of that company and an opportunity to share the research, frameworks, and lessons that come from managing an active investment book.My hope is that you don't simply read Black Swan to find out what happened in the market. I hope that, over time, you begin seeing markets differently.I want our readers to understand how economic developments connect to interest rates, how rates connect to equities and commodities, how institutional positioning can influence price action, how a company's fundamentals connect to its valuation, and how all of those pieces can ultimately come together to form an investment thesis. If Black Swan can shorten that learning curve for someone else and help create a generation of younger investors who are more knowledgeable, independent, and capable of conducting serious research themselves, then we are accomplishing what I created the newsletter to do.We're putting our research to work in our own book. We're sharing that process with you.And hopefully, we're giving you the tools to eventually build your own.Thank you for being part of Black Swan.
